Each year, on September 19, everyone pirates the common people for 24 hours in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day.
Talk Like a Pirate Day began unofficially in 1995 when two friends – John Baur and Mark Summers – were playing racquetball and fairly random began to encourage others using pirate jargon.
After discussion, Baur and Summers – or Chumbucket Ol 'Cap'n Slappy and, as they are known now – decided it would be a good idea to devote a special day each year to talk as pirates. They settled on 19 September, and for seven years and that friends dedicate this day each year to talk in pirate jargon.
Then, in 2002, Chumbucket after Ol 'Captain Slappy and enlisted the help of journalist Dave Berry, Talk Like a Pirate Day went global. Since then, this silly but fun holiday has gained popularity worldwide, with increasing numbers of people each year promised to talk like a pirate for the day to raise money for charity or just for the sheer joy of saying "arrrr" at the beginning of each sentence.
While it is not compulsory to dress like a pirate on Talk Like a Pirate Day or for a party, is certainly a lot of fun. Companies are realizing the potential of public relations for the celebration of Talk Like a Pirate Day, encouraging employees to participate and raise money for charity, while bars and restaurants are taking advantage of the growing popularity of the festival to host the pirates Theme nights and parties.
